God of War Ragnarok: Time Travel? Two giant snakes? Understand the story of Jomungandr
God of War Ragnarök has several characters who have their stories intertwined and, especially when it comes to Atreus, everything is more complicated, because he is the son of a Greek god with a giant of Nordic mythology and is present in the entire context of Ragnarök like Loki. It has a very deep connection with the story of Jormungandr, the serpent of the world, but it seems that many players did not quite understand what happened in the game.
We at MGG azil are going to explain the story, but it contains spoilers, so if you want to find out for yourself we recommend you stop reading here.
History of Jormungandr in Nordic mythology
Jormungandr is Loki's middle son with giant Anybody. His older other is Henri, the giant wolf and his younger sister is the goddess Held, the queen of Kelham.
In mythology, he is thrown into an ocean by Odin, after being kidnapped, and grows so much that he goes around the world. Because of this he wins the title of Midgard serpent, or serpent of the world. At Ragnarok, he fights Thor and both die. The God of Thunder kills him with his hammer and Jormungandr kills him with his poison.
Jormungandr in God of War Ragnarök
It is evident that there are pieces that do not fit the history of God of War at first. When we found that Atreus is Loki, the question soon arises that Jormungandr is that size, as he was just a child. This has already made many fans deduce it to be a time trip... and they were right.
It wouldn't be the first time this has happened, as Rates has returned in time to kill Zeus while destroying the Olympic pantheon. How would this happen in Nordic mythology?
We see that Atreus puts the soul of a giant in a snake, in the iron forest. We soon realized that it is Jormungandr, especially when Anybody comments that she does not stop growing.
When we met Jormungandr in God of War 2018, Mimic comments on Ragnarök as if it had already happened. She dare question him and the smartest man explains that it's complicated, as if Ragnarök had already happened and will still happen.
When we are in Asgard in Ragnarök, we see Thor a blow to Jormungandr that makes him disappear. The serpent does not fall or is destroyed, but disappears leaving a kind of black aura, as well as Sandro and Book, when they use their tricks. At this point the snake comes back in time.
After the end of the game, as we traveled to Midgard, Mimic and Freya start a dialogue confirming that Thor sent him back in time and that there is a young serpent (the one who Atreus put the soul) in their world.
To explain better, the first serpent was sent back long before you liver up, so that you were able to make friends with Mimic. At one point in the story she tells about the Iron Grove and Atreus finally discovers her destination. Meanwhile, the new Jormungandr continues to grow.
