Van Bommel signed a two-year contract with the club of the former Werder striker Johannes Eggestein.

Van Bommel only switched to the Wolfsburgers last year as the successor to Oliver Glasner.

After eight competitive games without a victory, the Bundesliga club separated from the Vice World Champion of 2010 again in October. His successor Florian Kohfeldt also had to go again at VfL.

The former European Cup finalist from Antwerp has great ambitions thanks to the financial support of his wealthy president.

In 2020 the club won the Belgian trophy, in 2021 he met Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League preliminary round. In the past season of the Belgian league, FC Royal finished fourth.
